Set up SocratiCode with VS Code

Install the SocratiCode VS Code extension, connect it to Agent Chat, index the workspace, and verify a first search.

What you need

Enable VS Code’s AI features and sign in to GitHub Copilot for native Agent Chat. VS Code 1.122 or newer can also use a BYOK model with tool calling without GitHub sign-in.

Install the editor extension

Install the SocratiCode extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace. Reload the VS Code window and start a new Chat session.

Run MCP: List Servers and confirm SocratiCode is running. Open the SocratiCode sidebar to confirm the editor integration loaded.

Index and verify one workspace

Open the project, select Index this workspace in the SocratiCode sidebar, and paste the copied prompt into Agent Chat to start indexing.

Check codebase_status until indexing completes. Then ask Agent Chat to use codebase_search for a function or feature you know is present. Open one result and confirm the file is from the current workspace.

The default watcher handles later changes while the integration is running.

Update the extension

Update SocratiCode through VS Code’s Extensions view. Reload the window and start a new Chat session so the updated integration is used.

For sensitive workspaces, review source-code boundaries before indexing. For one shared index across several developers, read shared team context.
